Relief for Allergy Symptoms

If you have environmental or seasonal allergies that don’t respond to commercially available medications, or if your medication causes side effects, let us know. We can work with your doctor and help to solve your problem by compounding an oral or topical preparation containing the most appropriate medication or combination of medications to meet your specific needs. For example, we can compound combinations of antihistamines to stop the allergic response; anticholinergics to reduce secretions; decongestants to relieve the discomfort of congestion; and novel ingredients such as tranilast, which has been shown to stabilize mast cells. Topical medications are absorbed through the skin and therefore produce fewer systemic side effects, and can work quickly to stop a local skin reaction to an allergy. For topical medications, we can select from a variety of proprietary bases to compound a medication that is absorbed appropriately for the condition that is being treated.

Tranilast is an antioxidant with anti-allergic and anti-inflammatory properties that has been used to treat disorders ranging from bronchial asthma to keloids/hypertrophic scars to low sperm counts. Tranilast inhibits the release of histamine and prostaglandins, which often produce allergy symptoms. Tranilast in topical form (such as tranilast 10% cream) provides relief from many relatively minor but compromising discomforts, such as inflammation, hives, itching or seasonal nasal congestion that affect your quality of life.

Antihistamines such as fexofenadine suppress histamine-induced itch and flare, as well as wheal formation. Antihistamines can be compounded in an appropriate base for topical use to promptly relieve these allergy symptoms.
