5 Natural Allergy Remedies

Spring is in the air. That means several things; warmer weather, cook outs, and for a lot of people, allergies.

According to the Allergy and Asthma Foundation of America, one in five people, or an estimated 50 million Americans, suffer from some type of allergies. As plants release pollen, millions of people with hay fever start to sniffle and sneeze. Allergies can make even the most enjoyable activities unbearable. Fortunately, there are remedies you can use to cope with allergies and enjoy your springtime! Let’s look at what allergies are and some of the treatments you can use to manage them.

An “allergic reaction” is a description of how your immune system overreacts to something that it shouldn’t. While your immune system is used to fighting off disease and sickness to keep you healthy, allergies are sort of like a false alarm. Your body is fighting something it doesn’t need to. Allergies can range from minor to severe. Symptoms vary from person to person, but the most common are symptoms such as a runny nose, sneezing, itching, rashes, swelling, or asthma.  So now that we have a basic understanding of what allergies are, we can discuss what can be done to manage them in a natural, healthy way. Good news! There are several things you can do to keep your seasonal allergies from ruining your spring!

Probiotics – Yes, probiotics are very helpful for managing allergies! Probiotics support your immune health and can help to repair a damaged intestinal lining. A study published in the journal Clinical & Experimental Psychology, found that Lactobacillus paracasei ST11 decreased nasal congestion in those suffering from seasonal allergies. Time to load up on those friendly bugs!

Exercise – Work out with a stuffy nose and sneezing? It might sound awful, but moderate intensity exercise could reduce allergy symptoms. Research has shown that when allergy sufferers exercised at a moderate intensity for just 30 minutes, they saw an 83% decrease in nasal congestion, itching, and sneezing. This suggests that a moderate level of exercise produces an anti-inflammatory effect in the nasal passages.

Honey – You’ve heard me say before that local honey is great for seasonal allergies. But it’s worth repeating. When you eat local honey, you are thought to be ingesting the local pollen. Over time, a person may become less sensitive to this pollen. Think of it as a sort of inoculation. As a result from such a constant exposure, those ingesting local honey can experience fewer seasonal allergy symptoms. It isn’t an immediate cure for your sniffling and sneezing, but it is a smart long term treatment for allergies.

Vitamin C – As I mentioned, allergies are your immune system fighting things that don’t need to be fought. Vitamin C is a natural antihistamine. It works by destroying the molecular structure of histamine, thereby decreasing the amount of histamine in the blood. The absorption of Vitamin C is highly dependent on the amount ingested. Therefore, it is recommended that more than 500mg per day is taken in through food or supplementation in order to achieve tissue saturation.

NAC – Also known as acetylcysteine, NAC reduces mucus and sniffles. It rebuilds the natural lining in lungs and nose to reduce allergies. It also boosts the levels of the antioxidant glutathione to help stabilize cell and liver function, which in turn help with the detoxification that often occurs in an auto-immune response such as allergies.

Magnesium – Magnesium is a mineral that helps relieve constricted airways in the lungs. One study found that lab animals severely deficient in magnesium had higher blood levels of histamine when exposed to allergens than animals that were getting enough magnesium.

These are just a few of the things that can help you effectively deal with allergies. It seems obvious, but when you give the body what it needs, it actually performs better! Give these provisions a try and go outside and enjoy springtime like never before!
