Coronavirus: Facts Not Fear

There is a lot of information about Coronavirus that is bombarding us every day. And with millions of Americans staying home and out of work, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed and afraid. But there is no need to panic. The best way to prepare is with knowledge. Knowledge about what Corona Virus is, and what the symptoms are.

What is it?

The Novel Coronavirus 2019 is simply a new strain of Coronavirus, hence “novel,” which is simply a type of common virus that can infect your nose, sinuses, or upper throat. It is very similar to a cold. The odds are that you have had one at some point before; however, Covid19 is a new strain that we don’t have natural antibodies to fight.

What are the symptoms?

Despite the havoc it is wreaking on the world right now, COVID 19 presents with mild symptoms. The following symptoms may appear within 2-14 days after exposure: Fever, Cough, and shortness of breath. These are the most typical symptoms; however, there are more severe emergency warning signs that may appear, if you experience any of the following you should seek immediate medical attention: Trouble breathing, Persistent pain or pressure in the chest, New confusion or inability to arouse, Bluish lips or face.

Fever is the main symptom. If your temperature reaches 100 degrees, it is considered a fever. Take your temperature in the afternoon and early evening for the most accurate results. In regards to coughing, you need to be mindful of a dry cough, but not just a tickle, or trying to cough something up, but a deep dry cough. Finally, difficulty breathing, this does not necessarily need to be accompanied by coughing. If you find you have tightness in your chest or can’t take deep breaths to contact your healthcare provider immediately.

How is it Transmitted?

Coronavirus is transmitted through person to person contact when we come into contact with people within six feet. This is why people have been told to practice social distancing and self-isolation. It has proven to be very effective in Wuhan, the center of the outbreak. It is important to note that the virus can live on surfaces for up to 17 hours, and can be transmitted through touching contaminated objects. However, this is not believed to be the primary method of transmission, but it is something to be of which we should be mindful.

What should you do?

If you have cold or flu symptoms and are under 60, the best thing that you can do is stay at home. Avoid contact with other people as much as possible. Then treat it as if it were a cold or flu: rest and hydration. In addition, I have outlined several supplements your body should be getting to boost its immune system. If you are over 60, pregnant, or have a compromised immune system, if you fall into one of these groups and experience any cold or flu symptoms, you should call your healthcare provider immediately. People with underlying conditions are the most at risk, regardless of age.

The most important thing to take away from all of this is that there is no need to panic. This is absolutely something that needs to be taken seriously, but if we all do our part to keep ourselves healthy, and isolate when necessary, we will get through this together! Fear is not the answer and will only make things worse!
