Foods to Boost Male Health

People often talk about nutritional needs as if it’s a one size fits all situation. The truth is men and women have different health needs, because we have different bodies! There are a lot of different foods that can be beneficial for male health issues. We’re not going to cover all of them, just a quick glance at some common foods and what they can do for you!

Lean Red MeatGreat news guys, red meat can actually be good for you! We’re talking about lean cuts of red meat though. Lean cuts of beef are packed with protein and have only a little more fat than chicken breast. Red meat is also a good source of leucine, an amino acid that helps build muscle.

BananasPotassium, Magnesium, and B6 are all found in bananas. Potassium helps in keep the sodium levels under control. This eventually stops your blood pressure from hitting the roof and it in turn reduces the risk of any heart problem

BroccoliBroccoli is high in potassium, Potassium helps maintain a healthy nervous system, optimal brain function and regular muscle growth. It is also high in vitamin C, beta-carotene, and a phytochemical called sulphoraphane, which has strong anticancer properties, specifically prostate and colon. Broccoli is also high in fibre which helps in digestion, prevents constipation, maintains low blood sugar and also curbs overeating

Brazil Nuts –Brazil Nuts are very high in Selenium. Selenium helps lower LDL – the bad cholesterol – and reduces the incidence of blood clots and cardiac disease. Other selenium benefits include: Increases natural Testosterone levels, improvements in sperm motility, and reduction of infertility. Eating just one nut provides your daily dose of selenium! However, try to keep it to two or three a day. Selenium is easy to overdose.

Chocolate –More good news, chocolate can actually help improve blood flow! The catch is it has to be dark chocolate, not milk or white. The flavanols in dark chocolate may curb levels of bad cholesterol, improve circulation, and keep blood pressure in check. Improved blood flow means more efficient work outs, and can help with erectile dysfunction. This isn’t a free pass to eat a ound of chocolate a day though. Try to keep it to 1 ounce a day.

Fatty FishOmega-3 fatty acids are polyunsaturated fats – the healthy fats. Omega 3s help the heart, circulation, immune system, and reduce the risk of prostate cancer. Fatty fish, also called “Oily fish” (like Salmon and Tuna), are the best sources of omega-3 fatty acids. Whats more oily fish also helps protect vision as well as memory too. Scientists have found out that older people who eat oily fish are at a lower risk of vision loss and helps in improving working memory.

Milk and Yoghurt -Both high in whey, which you may be familiar with as a muscle building agent. The best kind of yoghurt is Greek yoghurt. In addition to the muscle building amino acids, it also has lots of helpful probiotics to keep your gut healthy.

Leafy Green Vegetables –Leafy greens such as kale and spinach, have enough health benefits to fill their own article. But one often overlooked benefit is the high lutein and zeaxanthin. Both very helpful in preventing vision related problems, like macular degeneration and cataracts.

Athletes, Body Builders and Active Lifestyles Branched Chain Amino Acids benefit muscle metabolism and provide energy directly to muscle tissue.* The body requires higher amounts of branched chain amino acids during and following exercise as they are taken up directly by the skeletal muscles versus first being metabolized through the liver, like other amino acids.  Low BCAA levels contribute to fatigue and they should be replaced in one-hour or less following exercise or participation in a competitive event.
