How Cancer Can Cause Nerve Pain and Damage

Cancer can cause nerve pain and nerve damage in multiple ways. In some instances, cancerous masses may push against or crush nerves. In other cases, certain types of cancer may result in nutritional deficiencies that affect nerve function. Additionally, some types of chemotherapy and radiation may produce nerve pain and nerve damage in certain individuals.

The two main parts discussed below make up the nervous system.

Central nervous system (CNS). The brain and spinal cord are part of the CNS.

Peripheral nervous system (PNS). The nerves outside of the CNS that carry information back and forth between the body and the brain are part of the PNS. The PNS helps control the following:

– Movement

– Sensing, such as touching, hearing, seeing, tasting, and smelling o The functioning of the internal organs, such as the stomach, lungs, and heart

Nervous system symptoms may lead to a cancer diagnosis, appear soon after treatment, or may appear several years after treatment. The symptoms you experience depends on the part of the nervous system that is affected. Like a car your body will give warning signs (symptoms) that tell you to refuel or to change your oil. Preventing these symptoms is key in cancer prevention. Once you have certain symptoms, that’s when you are at risk of getting cancers and other diseases. So look for warning signs and be preventative!

Specific drugs are more likely to cause nervous system side effects and put you at risk of getting cancers. These include:

Vinca alkaloids, including vincristine (Vincasar), vinorelbine (Navelbine), and vinblastine (Velban)

Platinum-based drugs, such as cisplatin (Platinol) or oxaliplatin (Eloxatin)

Taxane drugs, such as docetaxel (Taxotere) and paclitaxel (Taxol)

Etoposide (Vepesid)

Cytarabine (Cytosar-U), in high doses

Ifosfamide (Ifex), in high doses

Methotrexate (multiple brand names), in high doses

Some drugs to prevent vomiting

Opioid pain relievers

Anticonvulsants, which are drugs to treat seizures
