How Well Do You Handle Stress?

STRESS STINKS! While with busy lives it is difficult to reduce stress how much you experience and how you react to it can lead to a variety of health problems. It is critical to learn more about how you deal with stress and how you can make even small improvements to not only good for preventing heart disease, but for all over health. 
A stressful situation sets off a chain of events. Your body begins to release adrenaline, a hormone that temporarily causes your breathing and heart rate to speed up and your blood pressure to rise. These reactions prepare you to deal with the situation. When stress is a constant, your body remains in HIGH GEAR. 

Long-term activation of your body’s stress response system may put you at risk for health troubles like:

  • digestive problems
  • anxiety
  • headaches
  • depression
  • sleep problems
  • weight gain
  • memory and concentration issues
  • high blood pressure
  • heart disease and stroke

How do you react under stress? 

  • eat to calm down?
  • speak and eat very fast?
  • drink alcohol or smoke?
  • rush around but do not get much done?
  • work too much?
  • procrastinate?
  • sleep too little, too much or both?
  • slow down?
  • try to do too many things at once?

These behaviors (even just one) may mean that you are not dealing with stress as well as you could.

There are good ways to deal with stress. Try exercising, maintaining a positive attitude, not smoking, not drinking too much coffee, eating a healthy diet and maintaining a healthy weight. EMPOWER yourself today by taking actions to control your stress level. 

  • Use positive self talk
  • Spend 15 minutes a day doing something you enjoy
  • Practice relaxation (deep breathing or another relaxation technique)
  • Talk a walk
  • Get enough sleep
