Do’s and Don’ts of Liver Care

How often do you think about your liver? If youre like most people, the answer is probably not very often at all. Thats normal, if your liver is working properly you dont even notice it. What exactly does your liver do? Basically, your liver processes everything you eat or drink, and either repackages it for your body to use or eliminates it. It makes a liquid called bile, which helps you break down fat from food. And it also stores sugar called glucose, which gives you a quick energy boost when you need it. Our modern lifestyles (toxins and chemicals in food, pollutants in the air, etc.) are especially taxing on our already very busy organ. Fortunately the liver has the ability to repair itself. As long as it is provided with the right nutrients, and toxins are kept to a minimum, it’s quite resilient.

Lets take a look at some of the dos and don’ts of liver care:

  1. Don’t drink a lot of alcohol. Alcohol can damage liver cells and lead to the swelling or scarring that becomes cirrhosis, which can be deadly (but contrary to popular belief alcohol isnt the only cause of cirrhosis). How much alcohol is too much? Current guidelines say men should drink no more than two drinks a day and women only one.
  1. Do add more potassium to your diet– Potassium-rich foods help to lower systolic blood pressure, lower cholesterol, and support a healthy cardiovascular system, in addition to helping cleanse your liver. You can get potassium from bananas, spinach, and beet greens.
  1. Dont take too much acetaminophen (Tylenol) – This can cause damage if taken in large amounts over a small amount of time. Its best to avoid it altogether and try other health products. Some cholesterol drugs can also occasionally have a side effect that causes liver problems, so be sure to read up on any medications you may be taking.
  1. Do drink coffee- Research shows that it can lower your risk of getting liver disease. No one is certain of why this is so, but the why isnt as important as the fact that it does. So add a cup of coffee to your morning routine if you dont already.
  1. Don’t breathe in toxins- Some cleaning products, aerosol products, and insecticides have chemicals that can damage your liver. Chemical additives in cigarettes also damage your liver, giving you yet another reason to give up smoking.
  1. Do limit your sugar- Any calories that aren’t burned off in the body are stored in the liver in the form of fat, and over time this can lead to a condition called non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. This in turn can lead to cirrhosis, so try to cut out as much sugar as possible.
  2. Do add more sulfur to your diet- Sulfur is required to boost enzymes and promote liver cleansing. Without adequate sulfur your liver cant cleanse itself fast enough, and toxic build-up outpaces toxin removal (which is obviously bad news). Foods that are rich in sulfur include garlic, broccoli, and onions.

There are certainly more things you can do for you liver that we haven’t covered, such as exercise, but these steps are a good start to making sure your liver is healthy, Remember, your liver cant keep you healthy if you dont keep it healthy!

BIOM 25 billion: Alzheimer’s disease is associated with severe cognitive impairments as well as some metabolic defects. Resent research conducted by Kashan University of Medical Sciences indicates a link between probiotics and cognitive function. The study was published in open-access journal frontiers in aging neuroscience. The group taking the probiotic, had levels of hs-CRP (highly sensitive c-reactive protein, a powerful marker of inflammation) decreased by 18% indicating a dramatic reduction in neuro-inflammation. Load up on your beneficial bacteria and let them go to work! I recommend taking 1 to 2 capsules nightly with cold water right before bed.

The need for enzymes are exacerbated with altered digestive function in the upper digestive tract. When stomach acid is altered there is a downstream effect on enzyme secretion from the pancreas. This creates a need for supplemental enzymes to facilitate proper breakdown, absorption and assimilation of nutrients. CheatZyme helps facilitate digestive reactions at the proper temperature and pH to maintain good microbiome health.

L-Glutamine is a key component in the maintenance of healthy intestinal mucosa. A lack of glutamine may lead to a loss of enterocyte (cells in the small intestine) integrity in the lining of the intestines, which may affect digestion and absorption or allow pathogens into the body.  Supplementing with L-Glutamine supports the maintenance of muscles, mental activity, immune response, proper mood balance, energy levels and digestive tract health.
