Drink your CUP OF JOE – 7 Benefits of Coffee

Coffee, the drink that helps get you going and gets you through work. The earliest records of coffee drinking date back to 15th century Arabia. It was used to stay awake during religious rituals. Now, centuries later, people are still drinking it to stay awake during meetings! But is there more to coffee than just being a stimulant? Certainly past cultures thought so, when they would drink coffee to treat upset stomachs and other ailments. There is a lot of information about how much coffee is too much, if it’s good for you, or if its best to stop drinking all together. It can be hard to make heads or tails of it all. Let’s take a look at some of the health benefits of coffee:

  1. Coffee can make you smarter (really!) -Many controlled trials in humans show that coffee improves brain function. Including memory, mood, energy levels, reaction times and general cognitive function. All thanks to caffeine. The caffeine in coffee inhibits a neurotransmitter called adenosine, which leads to increased firing of neurons.

  2. Diabetes -According to a meta-analysis of several studies, every additional cup of caffeinated and decaffeinated coffee consumed in a day was associated with a 9% and 6% lower risk of type 2 diabetes, respectively.

  3. Heart health -People used to think that coffee put you at risk for cardiovascular issues. However, the times they are a changing, new studies have shown that coffee drinking actually protects the heart from heart failure. Specifically people who drank about 4 cups a day.

  4. Cancer -The link between coffee and lower risk of cancer isn’t as strong as some of its other benefits, but there is some evidence to suggest cancer may help prevent liver cancer.

  5. Physical performance – Remember we mentioned caffeine earlier? Well in adition to cognitive benefits, caffeine helps fat cells break down body fat, releasing them into the blood as free fatty acids and making them available as fuel. The more fuel you have to burn the better your workout will go. Making a cup of coffee an hour or so before your work-out seem like a no-brainer!

  6. Nutrients -Coffee contains several important nutrients, including Riboflavin, Manganese, Potassium, Magnesium and Niacin. Each one of those nutrients plays an important role in your daily health.

  7. Alzheimer’s -Researchers discovered participants who drank 3 – 5 cups of coffee per day had a 65% decreased chance of developing Alzheimer’s disease or dementia later on in life.

To make sure you’re getting the most out of your coffee skip the instant and grab the real stuff. Both regular and decaf have their benefits. But remember, consuming caffeine after lunch time could interfere with your sleep patterns. So time your cup of Joe just right!
