Fish intake by pregnant women improves the growth of a child’s brain

Dietary lipid contains fatty acids such as omega-6 and omega-3, which are essential nutrients for many animals and humans. A study, conducted by Professor Tohoku University , found that a balanced intake of lipids by pregnant women is necessary for normal brain formation of the unborn child. The researchers noticed that when female mice were fed an omega-6-rich/omega-3-poor diet, their offspring were born with a smaller brain and showed abnormal emotional behaviour in adulthood.

This is of significance because people in many countries these days have poor dietary habits and tend to consume more seed oils that are rich in omega-6 fatty acids and less fish rich in omega-3 fatty acids.

A diet that contains a good balance of omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids improves the development of brain functions.

It is also important to remember omega-9 fatty acids. They don’t get mentioned as much as Omega-3 and 6, because the body is capable of producing them naturally. Omega-9s may benefit health by helping to lower LDL (“bad”) and raise HDL (“good”) cholesterol. They are also associated with increased physical activity, more energy and even lower levels of irritability.

-Omega-3 fatty acids are a collection of polyunsaturated fatty acids, including eicosapentaenic acid (EPA) and docosahexanoic acid (DHA), found in fish, and alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), which is found in plants. EPA and DHA are called essential fatty acids (because the body doesn’t produce them itself). That’s why it’s important to get omega-3 fatty acids from food or from supplements.
