High nutrient content -Avocados provide nearly 20 essential nutrients, including potassium, Vitamin E, B-vitamins, and folic acid and are a good source of fibre and folate.
High in fat -The biggest benefit of avocados is their high monosaturated fat levels. Monosaturated fats, such as Omega-3’s, are the “good” fats. They help control inflammation and have been shown to have beneficial effects on genes related to cancer cells. One study found that avocados appear to inhibit and destroy oral cancer cells.
Avocados are high in potassium -They contain more potassium than bananas. Potassium helps send more oxygen to your brain, which lets it do its job better. It also helps muscle repair themselves, maintains fluid levels in the body, reduce blood pressure and risk of heart attack/strokes.
Good for digestion. Avocados are a great source of fibre, which keeps the digestive system running efficiently, and slows the breakdown of carbohydrates which helps you feel full longer. It is also helpful in the management of both constipation and diarrhoea. Even more good news, a single serving of avocado contains 40% of your daily fibre needs.
Avocados help your body absorb nutrients from other foods –A lot of nutrients are fat soluble, which means they need to be combined with fat to be used, antioxidants are one such nutrient. Studies have found that eating avocados increases antioxidant absorption by significant amounts. So if you want to get the most out of the foods you’re eating, think about adding an avocado or avocado oil to the mix.
Protect you liver -One study has found that avocado may also help protect against liver damage. The exact mechanism by which this works is unclear, but it was shown to reduce liver damage brought on by Hepatitis C in rats. It’s unclear if this also works in humans, but if adding more avocados to your diet could help your liver, why not!
Good for your eye sight -Avocados are high in lutein, a carotenoid that works as an antioxidant and helps protect your eyes. They also contain the other carotenoids zeaxanthin, alpha-carotene and beta-carotene, and tocopherol (vitamin E).
Anti-Aging -Consuming avocados is also associated with healthy aging. It contains compounds such as xanthophyll. Studies found that an intake of xanthophyll may decrease certain signs of the aging.
