CAUTION: Your lack of sleep doesn’t just affect you

Sleep has more benefits than just making you feel refreshed. Adequate sleep is a key part of a healthy lifestyle, and can benefit your heart, weight, mind, and more.

Healthy Brain  -Sleep is crucial to making sure your brain works properly. While you sleep your brain forms new pathways to help you learn and retain information. During sleep you can actually strengthen memories or “practice” skills learned while you were awake. So if you’re learning a new skill (a new language, a sport, etc.) Make sure that you are getting adequate sleep, to make sure all your hard work and practice doesn’t go to waste.

Just as proper sleep has benefits, lack of sleep can have negative consequences. Some of these consequences include: impacting some aspects of brain function to a similar degree as alcohol intoxication. Poor sleep is even associated with increased risk of death by suicide. This ties into the fact that an estimated 90% of patients with depression complaining about poor sleep quality.

Physical Health -Sleep is also a very important component of your physical health. For example, sleep plays an important role in healing and repairing of your heart and blood vessels. Thus, sleep deficiency is linked to an increased risk of heart disease, kidney disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, and stroke.  A study also found that C-reactive protein, which is associated with heart attack risk, was higher in people who got six hours of sleep, or less, a night.

Sleep also helps with physical fitness. A study on basketball players found that longer sleep was shown to significantly improve speed, accuracy, and reaction times. So if you want to play at peak performance, make sure to get plenty of sleep!

Safety -Your lack of sleep doesn’t just affect you. After several nights of losing sleep, even a loss of just 1–2 hours per night, your ability to function suffers as if you haven’t slept at all for a day. Obviously operating on so little sleep puts you at risk of accidents. Sleep deficiency has been the cause of several tragic accidents, such as grounding of large ships, and aviation accidents. Not to mention smaller accidents like highway car crashes.

Weight Gain- You might not think sleep and weight go together, but studies have found that poor sleep is strongly linked to weight gain. In one study, children and adults with poor sleep were 89% and 55% more likely to become obese, respectively. Another reason to make sure you’re getting adequate sleep is that studies have found that people who are overweight are at greater risk of developing sleep apnoea. Therefore, lack of sleep can lead to weight gain, which can lead to sleep apnoea, which leads to less quality sleep, which then leads to more weight gain, heart trouble, mental decline, etc. See why a good night’s sleep is so important?

Melatonin is the principle hormone produced and secreted by the brain’s pineal gland and is responsible for maintaining circadian rhythm (the body’s biological clock), regulating the endocrine (hormone) system and supporting the immune system. Low levels of melatonin could result in poor sleep patterns, low mood, and delayed sleep phase syndrome, insomnia associated with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, irritability, learning disorders, poor concentration, seasonal affective disorder, menstrual disturbances and headaches.
